Does Music Have The Power to Heal?

Updated: Mar 18, 2023

Music is powerful, it can affect your mood just by listening to a happy or sad song. Not only that it affects our homes we live in. Just put on some uplifting music on the radio whilst you're cooking, cleaning or generally just pottering around the house. Immediately things seem brighter, clearer and your mood is more upbeat. You may start singing along, whistling or even moving to the beat, but Does Music have the Power to Heal?

Music Therapy

Research is showing that music therapy is more than it seems. It can improve medical outcomes and quality of life in a variety of ways.

  • Hearing music in the recovery room lowered the use of painkillers.

  • Helps restore lost speech. Music therapy can help people who are recovering from a stroke or traumatic brain injury that has damaged the left-brain region responsible for speech.

  • Reduces side effects of cancer therapy. Listening to music reduces anxiety associated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. It can also quell nausea and vomiting for patients receiving chemotherapy.

  • Aids pain relief. Music therapy has been tested in patients ranging from those with intense acute pain to those with chronic pain from arthritis. Overall, music therapy decreases pain perception, reduces the amount of pain medication needed, helps relieve depression, and gives people a sense of better control over their pain.

  • Improves quality of life in dementia patients. Because the ability to engage with music remains intact late in the disease process, music therapy can help to recall memories, reduce agitation, assist communication, and improve physical coordination.

The Gift of Bubbles

If music can do all this, Does music have the power to heal? I believe so, let me tell you this little story...

I have been contacted many times with people telling me how listening to my songs and especially the song 'Bubbles' has helped them. But one I remember very clearly is an email I received that said "I can't thank you enough for this gift, in this moment of time which is important to me. I have to deal with a personal crisis and require faith and hope for life."

An email like that hits you and it still chokes me now. I sent my love and prayers to the young lady and asked her to keep in touch with me.

A few weeks later I received a follow up email from the young lady which said "I am simply bewildered and trying to understand what I am hearing. I've just got home from some serious medical tests and it seems the last tumour tests were wrong. A few more tests to do but it's good news"

The young lady said she had been listening to the song 'Bubbles' over and over again and was convinced the Gift of Bubbles had helped. If a song can help just one person then it's a HIT! :)

I think Music Therapy research shows how important Music and Hospital Radio's are across our country. The Gift of Music is a Gift from Above for all of us to enjoy.

Please consider picking up a copy of my music - it really helps me to create even more music :)
